Friday back to the mainland and up the Neuse River to New Bern

On Friday we woke early, had coffee with Mustang Sally and caught the 7:30 ferry to Cedar Island.

Passing through town we saw Main Street and the empty building where Sally's daughter was going to open her coffee shop. And I was able to photo another lighthouse.

......and we rode another great NC DOT ferry. This one was the first with a cost ..... $3.00 for a person with bicycle .......was 2 HR and 15 minutes to Cedar Island.

Since nothing was open at 7AM in town we left without breakfast, thinking on a ferry ride that long we could get breakfast on the boat. After all there had been breakfast on the boats out of NYCity and NJ Cape May. But today, nothing but bad coffee, okay no problem we can get breakfast when we land at 10 o'clock there was nothing.

.
Vast stretches of marsh and swamp broken occasionally by pine forest.

.....but no stores or breakfast. This points out the joys of cycle touring which is that each day is an adventure and you never know what the ay will bring around the next bend. Well we did find a small convenience store with some great sandwiches, were refreshed and headed to New Bern.

We took some back roads to another NC DOT ferry across the Neuse River.

This one on a Friday afternoon was loaded with about 20 little 10 year old girls on a weekend retreat to a camp on the Pimlico peninsula. They fed the birds and generally had a rollicking good time.

As an aside on this ferry like many along the sandy coast ... Fully loaded this ferry could motor through as little as 5 feet of water. Amazing!

We had a warm shower waiting in New Bern so after the ferry and a stop at a local fish shack for an ice cream and a piece of coconut cream pie we pressed on to New Bern.

Our hosts Betty and Marshall had a lovely house waiting and served us a welcoming dinner.

  1. Hi Alan. My mother was born in New Bern, was married in New Bern and is now buried in New Bern at Christ Episcopal Church in the outdoor chapel. My family is spending the weekend in Morehead City. I'm not sure how you got from Cedar Island to New Bern but there is another sweet 15 minute ferry that goes from Cherry Point to Minesott beach that is one way to get to New Bern. I assume you will head down towards Jacksonville or Wilmington next. I think you are in the part of the country with the world's best barbecue. I implore you to have a barbecue sandwich with some hushpuppies before you get out of that next of the woods. If you want to have the best fried seafood ever then stop in Calabash at the NC/SC line to eat great food. Love the blog of you touring my homeland.

  2. Alan, I think you need to learn how to hunt - then you can eat better on the road!
