Wednesday Virginia City into North Carolina

A good thing we were in a hotel because by morning it was raining and a cool 50 degrees. After a nice complimentary hotel breakfast we headed out into intermittent want rain. Avoiding both Norfolk and Virginia City we headed due south toward NC in a slight drizzle.

With the overcast sky came an north wind and we made good time. Through Virginia and into North Carolina where the rain stoped.

We left behind the populated Norfolk and cycled along a remote rural area into the Knott Island wildlife refuge.

..... to our 3rd ferry run by the terrific State of NC DOT.

Again on rural empty roads we headed south on a narrow penninsula toward the outer banks on NC and Kitty Hawk.

But to reach the Island we needed to cross an old bridge that was several miles long and under repair and with one of the 2 spans. And to compound the problem we arrived in a dense fog late in the day. The span open was narrow, busy with 2 way traffic and no shoulder.

...... but the span under construction was almost finished and after climbing over some machinery we had our own bran new road all to ourselves and headed off into the fog. Half way across the bridge we  ran into some workers who were happy to see us and thankful we didn't ride the old span.

...... here is the road not taken.

It was late when we reached Kitty Hawk and I persuaded a Nick to join me for a night in a hotel.

We got a great nights rest.
