Thursday a tailwind for the ride down the Outer Banks

We woke early in Kitty Hawk famous for where the Wright brothers (the most famous bicyclists ever) went because of the winds. So naturally we were nervous about the wind.

.... but like the bridge the night before we had good fortune on our side and the wind Wes behind us.

Another lighthouse near Kitty Hawk.

This picture is typical of what we saw not just on the Outer banks of NC but also along the New Jersey shore. And often and especially in NJ there we new, high end construction. I called them the global warming deniers.

The barrier islands were just beautiful.

The excavation machines are used to clear the road of sand after a storm.

...... part way down we connected Pea Island to Ocracoke and rode another ferry.

We didn't have a warm shower arranged but our good fortune kept rolling when a lady approached us on the ferry after seeing my bicycle loaded up as evidence of a through rider and of offered us a room in her charming cottage right on the beach.

It was an old family home and she lived with her daughter and husband who were musicians and played for a band called Molasses Creek who won the Garrison Keeler Prairie Home Companion's best band from a town less than 3,000 people.

And Sally herself was an long time cyclist who had who had toured extensively and even written a book about her experiences.

It was a great day.

  1. Glad you made it to Ocracoke---the home of my maternal ancestors who are all buried there---Howards, Farrows, Gibbs, Wahabs. I'm glad you met Sally and had a good Ocracoke adventure. One of my forebears William Howard was the quartermaster for the pirate Blackbeard, also a wonderful product of Ocracoke. I hope you ate lots of seafood and hushpuppies with a cold beer.
